Why Salary Alone Isn't Enough
Most freelancers make the mistake of pricing based on what they want to earn, not what they need to survive. If you want a $80,000 salary but spend $5,000 on software, insurance, and equipment, your business must generate $85,000 — not $80,000. That gap is invisible until you burn through savings.
Health insurance alone can cost $500–$800/month in the US. A laptop and phone depreciate 20–30% annually. Professional liability insurance, accounting software, and co-working space add thousands more. None of these are optional; they're the cost of doing business. If you ignore them, you're effectively subsidizing your clients with your own financial security.
Vacation time is another hidden cost. A 4-week break means you only have 48 billable weeks. If you bill 25 hours per week, that's 1,200 hours — not 2,080 (40 × 52). Dividing your annual needs by 1,200 instead of 2,080 can easily double your required hourly rate. Charging $40/hour when you actually need $80/hour is a one-way ticket to burnout.
Finally, taxes. Self-employment tax in the US adds roughly 15.3% on top of income tax. A $80,000 salary becomes $100,000+ in pre-tax revenue once you account for the full burden. Use this calculator to find your floor, then add a 20–30% margin for profit and risk.
